Geek Out at a Museum
Washington, D.C. is home to some of the best museums in the U.S., and many of them won’t cost you a dime. Hop on the Metro and head to one of these fine institutions.
Smithsonian Natural History Museum
You could spend all of Father’s Day at the Smithsonian Natural History Museum and still not see everything. From dinosaurs to Neanderthals, you’ll find it here. There’s a reason why it’s the most-visited museum in North America, and we’re lucky to have it here in D.C.
National Museum of American History
The National Museum of American History is often overlooked, but it’s worth a visit. The museum is home to the original Star Spangled Banner, the War of 1812-era flag that inspired Francis Scott Key to write what would become America’s national anthem.
Air and Space Museum
Visit the Air and Space Museum to see antique aircraft and cool relics of American space travel. For $7, Dad can get in a flight simulator and see what it’s like to do barrel rolls in an F-4 Phantom II fighter jet.

- Take Dad to get his James Bond on at the International Spy Museum.
Go Sightseeing
There are so many buildings of note in D.C. that you don’t need a guide to take a walking tour. You can’t miss the highlights. A walk around the National Mall will offer sights of the White House, the Lincoln Memorial, Washington Monument, the Capitol and more.
Want to stick to Tenleytown? Take dad to Fort Reno Park to see the site of the only Civil War action to take place in D.C.
Check out the D.C. Jazz Festival
Washington, D.C. has a long jazz history. (We are the hometown of Duke Ellington, after all.) The fast-growing D.C. Jazz Festival wraps up on Father’s Day, starting with a brunch at Malmaison and featuring numerous performances at venues across the city.
Take Dad Out for a Bite
In Tenleytown and surrounding neighborhoods, there are good restaurants for all budgets. Keep it simple with a pizza from Pete’s, or walk over to Connecticut Avenue and challenge Dad to a match of ping pong over a beer at Comet Ping Pong.
If you’re looking to splurge, take him to a high-end steakhouse like Bourbon Steak in Georgetown, located in the Four Seasons. Dress nicely, though, because you might spot a celebrity or a big-shot politician.
Check Out Some Antique Cars
If muscle cars are Dad’s thing, just across the Potomac River in Crystal City, VA is the Crystal Car Show from 2 to 6 p.m. on Father’s Day.
